The Silk Road was a vast network of trade routes that connected the Western world to the Middle East and Asia. Along its winding paths traveled not only silks, paper, and porcelain, but also philosophies, religions, and ideas—shaping civilizations through exchange and encounter.
This issue of The Scriptorium invites contributors to draw from this inspiration. Interpret the theme freely—explore cultural crossings, imagined histories, untold migrations, or the tension between movement and stillness.
The visual tone of this issue centers around warm jewel tones to evoke the richness of trade—deep paprika reds, tourmaline oranges, ochres, and golds—with base colors including ivory and sand. Textile inspiration includes silk and woven textiles. These are guiding motifs, not limits, so again, please take creative liberties.
Theme: The Silk Road
The Scriptorium welcomes works of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, essays, visual art, photography, and experimental work that blurs the boundaries between forms. We seek pieces that are thoughtful, bold, and artistically curious—works that speak across disciplines or invite readers into unfamiliar terrain. Whether polished or raw, traditional or strange, if it resonates, we want to see it.
